Zen Shorts {readibles}

There’s something to be said about a nice calm book. There’s even more to be said about a nice calm kids book. I suppose that it’s not terribly surprising, given the book’s title, that this book has calm in spades. Even the artwork– featuring delightful watercolour washes reminiscent of sumi-e– is soothing.

Zen Shorts follows three young people (okay… kids) as they meet and learn from a thoughtful and wise Panda named Stillwater. As each child comes to know him, Stillwater emparts a lesson in the form of a story.

All well and good, you say, to teach the children via a cute and cuddly Panda with a sack full of Buddhist parables. To be honest though, the real value here is probably for the parents. Can you think of a better close to a busy day of toddler-minding than a short story extolling the virtue of patience? I can’t think of any either.
